I won 2nd place for my doily!

My blanket didn't win. :( It wasn't even unfolded. :(

I know this because I folded it specifcly to make sure at least one of the corners and some of the border was showing. I suppose I should be happy that it wasn't unfolded, because some of the baby blankets were hung over a drying rack with rubber bands holding the blankets, kind of like a curtain tie.

I think I'm OK with this. Not a single baby blanket won an award. All blankets are judged together, there are not seperate catagories for full size and baby size.

The blanket was made for a friend, so it was made for a purpose, not just the fair.

3 {or should I say 4} Vintage Poinsettia Doilies Finally Finished!

I made these doilies for Christmas presents for my sister and mother, and of course one for me! I had to make mine twice because I was working on one at the hospital while my father-in-law was having surgury and a nurse came by and asked if I was selling these, so I sold her mine.

These work up so quickly once you get the centers of the flowers done. That part took me a little more time because they are so small, just one round of single crochets.

Since I had to re-make mine, I made it just a little different. I did the green all the way around the flowers and then added them to the doily. This one measures 14".

Vintage Poinsettia Doily

I used South Maid size 10 cotton thread and size 7 steel hook. I don't know the exact colors because I used thread I had left over from other projects and the color bands were missing. It measures 11 1/2" across.

Holly Wreath Christmas Doily

I was unpacking my Christmas decorations and I found this doily I made several years ago. I use it as a tree skirt for a small table top tree. It measures 18" across. I no longer have the pattern nor do I remember the name of it, but I think it came from a 'Magic Crochet' magazine, probably in the '80's.

UPDATE: Someone over at Crochetville has provided information on this doily. It is the Holly Wreath Mat from Magic Crochet December 1987 number 51.

Blue Ribbon

I went to the fair grounds to pick up my ribbon. They handed me my stuff and I started to walk away. Then I noticed a note attached to the ribbon, which said "Interested in any of the entries?", then had a line for my name and description of my item, then a line for this person's name and phone number. I ask one of the workers what this meant, as this was my first fair entry, and I didn't know what it was for. She said someone was interested in my afghan and that this person wanted me to contact her, probably to ask about the pattern or stitch I used.

I called the lady and she said that I did a wonderful job on my afghan and wanted to know if it was for sale! I was stunned! I said yes, she bought it!

The afghan was going to be donated to charity, but I thought with the money I could buy more yarn and make another one or two for charity.

I started this on July 18 and finished it yesterday, July 22! It worked up so quick and easy.

FRONT and BACK

I used the whole ball of Lily Big Deal Thread, Article 74P, Size 5, 300 yards, Color Mistletoe, and Size 6 Hook.

My grid is 23 x 23, 11 rounds, and measures 7" x 7". I worked the grid "in the round" and worked 5 dc on each post. Then I did a final round of sc for a more finished look.

Re-Calculation of Yo-Yo Afghan

I had decided to go against my earlier intentions of joining as I go and am doing all the yo-yos first, and then I will join them.

I also estimated I would need 352 yo-yos, but after finishing that many, and laying them out on a sewing board the size I want the finished afghan, I now know that figure was way off!

After laying them out I decided to join a few to get a more accurate re-calculation of how many yo-yos I would need. This is the way I want the finished afghan to look.

I have now calculated I will need 626 yo-yos. So, I'm still making yo-yos.

I'm so excited!!!

I won a blue ribbon, 1st Place!!!

The fair opened today at noon. I was very anxious all morning. Lots of butterflies in my tummy! I was at the fair with my mother when the gates opened. Of course I went straight to the Home Arts & Crafts building. It took me a few minutes to find my display. The crocheting is displayed all together with the knitting and quilting. And then I found it. I was so excited when I saw the ribbon on my name tag. I called my husband, my daughter and my sister to share my great news with them. I was not the only entry in the "shell" catagory, as I had feared.

The Beginning Of A WIP

I have never done this before, and I'm not sure what to think yet, but I am going to start a yo-yo lapghan for a local charity. I have been wanting to do this type of afghan for some time now, and I think this yarn gives me the perfect opportunity to do it. This yarn was donated to me by a family friend. The colors remind me of a sunset {my husband said the desert}, lots of oranges, golds, and some yellows, rusts, browns and creams. I will be joining the yo-yos with black. There are 15 skeins of yarn, but only 7 appear to be full skeins. I'm hoping this is enough yarn, but if not, I will just buy what I need. That's the beauty of this type of afghan, you can use all different colors.

I will be making a lapghan, 36" x 48". I am using an "H" hook. My yo-yos take 62" of yarn, they measure 1 3/8".

The joining round takes 36" of yarn, the yo-yos then measure 2 1/4".

So quick calculations tells me I will need approximately 16 yo-yos per row, 22 rows, equals 352 yo-yos. This total will probably be adjusted as I get into it. I will make enough yo-yos for a row, then I will join them. I am hoping that breaking it up this way will keep me going. I'm also going to tuck in the ends as I go, so this will not be an overwhelming task later on.

So, 1 down, 351 to go!

Squiggly Hotpad For My Sister

This is a work in progress. It is my attempt at a hotpad for my sister. Her mother-in-law made one, it is really old, and my sister asked me if I could dupciate it. I didn't have a pattern, but after studying it, I told her I would give it a try. So here is my attempt...

This is the thread I'm using. So far it's a grid of 13x13 and measures 3". As you can see from the back, it's curling around the edges. I don't know if this will correct itself when I get closer to finishing it.

The front looks very crowded, but I don't remember if this is the way it's suppose to look. But I will continue on.

I'm hoping that by putting this here it will inspire me to finish it. It has been a UFO for quite some time.

It's Official!

I dropped off my fair entry today. Today was the last day to drop off entries, and at the time I dropped mine off I was the only entry in the catagory I had chosen. I hope there are other entries, I don't want to win a ribbon by default because I was the only entry. And my whole purpose for entrying was to see how well I compare with others. I also found out today that the judging is in three days!

I really liked the way the blanket turned out. I think all the stitches were consistant. I think I hid all my yarn joinings well. Now I just have to wait to see what the judges think.

I know this isn't crochet... yet!

I made this elephant several years ago. She's 20 1/2 inches tall. I got the pattern for a quarter from a store that was going out of business. I used the material from an old unicorn costume I made for my daughter.

I taught my first class on Michael's! I had three students. One has crocheted before, but it was many years ago, so she just needed a refresher course. The other two had never crocheted before. The time went so quickly, it was over before we knew it. They said I was a good teacher, very patient with them. It was so much fun! I can hardly wait for my next class!

In the first pic, I made the eyes and beak wrong, apparently I can't read directions, so I corrected them in the second pic, but then I thought he looked sad, so I corrected them yet again in the third pic, but now I think he looks evil.

Crochet Instructor At Michael's!

I am the new crochet instructor at my local Michael's! I'm so excited. I went shopping, they had a sign on the classroom window, I talked to the manager, and she hired me on the spot. I can't wait to get started.

This is my display board for the store.

My first event in two weeks is "Class Preview", which is when all the instructors for all the classes held there get together and set up displays in the store and sit there for the afternoon trying to get customers to sign up for your classes. My first class is scheduled the following week. It's a basic beginners class. I still have to come up with a project for them to work on. I want something easy and hopefully simple enough that they can complete it in class.

These are scarves I made for my granddaughters using Bernat Eye Lash. The colors are "Sultry" (multi) and "Lipstick" (pink). Great names to use for little girls! The 4 year old picked out the colors, and since she can't read yet, I know she has no idea what the names are! But they were a dollar at BigLots, so I shouldn't complain too much.

I am finally working on a lapghan I started over two years ago and then sat in the bottom of my stash as a UFO because I lost interest in it. It really had no purpose. I started it because I had the yarn, I was bored, I thought I would try something new. The colors are peach and white. The pattern is sc, ch 1. I love the look, but didn't realize how long it would take to make even a lapghan in single crochet. Well, the lapghan finally has a purpose! I am going to donate it a local hospital that is doing a lapghan drive for their cancer patients. I am hoping by posting this, along with a picture, it will continue to motivate me into finally finishing it.

I made up a bunch of these for my family for Christmas. I purchased plastic balls instead of glass, so I didn't have to worry about me or the family breaking them. I purchased the silver and gold metallic thread at my LYS after Christmas last year. It took one 22 yard spool for each ornament. I created the patterns myself.

Crochet Edging on Receiving Blankets

I made several of these receiving blankets for my grandson. I went to the hospital with my daughter when she had her ultrasound and there was a lady sitting next to me doing this, and since I didn't speak Spanish we couldn't communicate, so I just sat and watched her. On my way home I stopped to buy some blankets and thread. I searched my patterns, found some edging patterns, and set out to try my hand at this. I just used the same holes that they made with their hemming stitches, which then covered up their stitches. My daughter loved them and couldn’t believe that I just made these up from watching someone else do it.

For many years I have been making items for charity. I crocheted baby layettes for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, a non-profit charitable organization which gives baby bags to new moms of the armed forces. I crocheted squares and helped join them for Warm Up America!, whose primary purpose is to organize and assist in the creation of blankets by volunteers and to distribute these blankets to needy and homeless people. I crocheted blankets for Project Linus, a non-profit organization that distributes blankets to children of all ages who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. In addition to charity work, I have crocheted many items for family and friends, and have sold several items at craft fairs.
